The Massapequa School District's annual breast cancer awareness fundraiser, raised $6,600 in October, district officials announced this week.
The centerpiece of the fundraising event was the Girls Volleyball team's Dig Pink Match, but several other?teams, including girls tennis, field hockey, boys volleyball, boys junior varsity football and girls junior varsity soccer also raised funds as part of "Think Pink" week.
The events were held in October as part of Breast Cancer awareness Month.
In addition to raising money for breast cancer research, the girls volleyball team also raised funds for "Stand Up to Cancer." ?For a small donation, fans placed the name of a loved one with cancer on a display poster.
The effort, led by volleyball coach CarolAnn Habeeb-Kiel, has raised close to $50,000 over the past five years.
?Many thanks go out to everyone who participated in this year?s Dig Pink event and Think Pink efforts,? Habeeb-Kiel said. ?Because of you, and the generosity and support of our community, the volleyball booster club, local businesses and staff members throughout the district, we have made impact on fighting this dreaded disease.?
