Prostate Cancer Pony Express Raises Awareness in Arizona ...

Phoenix (PRBuzz.com) April 11, 2012 -- Arizona Governor, Janice K. Brewer, has proclaimed September 2012 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The 2012 PCAP Prostate Cancer Pony Express riders recently delivered a letter to the Governor's office in Phoenix requesting increased attention of prostate cancer and support for the Roundtable's agenda.

The Prostate Cancer Pony Express is the first ever 50-state charity motorcycle relay rally to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer. Less than a month into their six month motorcycle event the Prostate Cancer Pony Express has already helped in the declaration of September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Months for Louisiana and Arizona.

In Arizona, there are more than 3,300 new prostate cancer diagnoses recorded and 550 deaths a year. Governor Brewer encourages all men in the state of Arizona to become aware of the risks of prostate cancer, talk to their health care providers, and wherever appropriate, get screened for this disease.

Why Prostate Cancer Awareness Matters
Prostate cancer strikes one of every six men. According to the National Cancer Society, there are over 240,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in 2011, and nearly 34,000 men died from the disease in 2011.

Prostate cancer is a "silent killer," since there generally are few symptoms until the disease is advanced. "Prostate cancer is highly treatable if caught prior to metastasis, but detection and diagnosis are critical," Hess said.

Fundraising
The Prostate Cancer Awareness Project has partnered with the Prostate Conditions Education Council [http://www.PCEC.org] to generate funds for free prostate cancer screening. Funds raised by the riders will be used to support free testing programs in the states where raised and for the PCAP's free Internet PSA tracking service, ProstateTracker.org.
