This phenomenon has been going on for some time. Many of you have already made some adjustments for the BYOD or Bring Your Own Device movement, maybe without even giving it much thought. Some of your workers may have even gained access to your business network without formal approval.

What is Good about BYOD?

First and foremost, people tend to be more productive, if you let them work remotely on their own devices. For example, some choose to deal with the influx of email from their armchair in the morning or evening via iPads or tablet. It extends their work hours in a way that they choose, and makes them more productive during business hours. Secondly, many organizations are calculating the cost savings of allowing users to provide their own devices. This is most common for sales and other workers who work remote or travel. In addition, BYOD often creates a higher level of job satisfaction. This is particularly true of younger workers who view their device as an extension of their personality, or as a symbol of their tech savvy. Using their own device is actually a source of pride and satisfaction.

The downside of BYOD is quickly recognized, if you ask any IT manager. The traditionalist will say absolutely not. The dangers are many, with the biggest being theft of information. 2. Consider using mobile device management. Mobile device management is a way of controlling sensitive data on phones, tablets, iPads and other devices. The second is ?Walled Garden?, which limits data on the user?s device to a certain designated area so that it can be easily controlled. Each of these requires different types of technology to implement.

4. Define your program. Is it voluntary or mandatory? Will you reimburse for data charges or for any part of device? Are all employees included, or just certain job classifications?

5. Make sure you are not violating any privacy requirements of your industry or customers. For instance, personal information like social security, medical, health, and credit card information should never be stored unencrypted on any machine whether company owned or a personal device. Protected information like health and financial information must be encrypted at all times. When you start up a course, you do your best to make it as easy as possible to achieve. And it?s more than likely that you want to get this message of ease across to the course participants. But they don?t see it that way at all. Often they see you as the maestro, the person they hope to be, sometime in the future.

But at least at the start of the course, there?s a huge mismatch. Despite their best intentions and bravado, the participants can?t see themselves replicating what you do. But the alumni prove that they?ve broken the four-minute barrier. And they create an atmosphere and end point that any new participant can envision. And in doing so, they create a series of winners for you?all breaking the four-minute barrier.

But the usefulness of the alumni doesn?t stop there.

They?re critical in creating a safe zone, and they do so in many ways:

1) They tackle the questions that may seem ?too hard to ask?

2) Smoothening out the bumpy logistical issues

2) They share their experiences in great detail.

1) Tackling the questions that may seem ?too hard to ask?

When a person just begins a course, they feel a great deal of intimidation. You may do all you can to get them to relax, but they?re clearly out of their comfort zone. And the alumni helps them relax. Now, instead of having to deal with you, the head honcho; the big shot, the new participants may prefer to deal with the alumni instead.

While they may hesitate to ask you questions, they find it a lot less intimidating to ask the alumni the very same questions. This gets the new participants relaxed and this relaxation is very important. If the participants feel agitated, it creates a big barrier to their learning. Once that wall is down, they can actually let their hair down, have fun and speed up their learning.

If that?s all the alumni did, they?d be super-useful, but it doesn?t stop there. The logistical issues can bury a newcomer. And the alumni does a lot to smoothen out the bumps.

2) Smoothening out the bumpy logistical issues

Let?s take the Psychotactics cartooning course, for instance. Part of the course requires you to post your cartoon online and link it back to the forum (ah, your eyes are glazing over already, aren?t they?)

Well, when you?re a newcomer on the course, it?s more than just the logistical issues that bug you. You may have logistical issues AND you may be opposed to posting online OR not want to do this, or do that. Usually someone in the alumni has gone through the same logical nightmare and trepidation (big word for ?bubbling fear?) as you. When they describe what they did, and how they resolved the issues, you know you can do it too.

And of course, all issues can?t be covered. There?s always something that?s missing

But that?s where the Ask Alumni section comes in. If you have a place to Ask Alumni, you know you can always fire away, and get a response. It?s always a lot harder to deal with the head honcho (that?s you, who?s holding the course) because you may feel you?re interrupting, or that your questions are too silly. But it?s not that hard to ask Alumni.

What?s also interesting, is that these issues come out only right at the start of a course. Once a week or two has passed, everyone?s mostly settled in. Which also brings up an interesting point: Participants need to be comfortable BEFORE the course, not get flustered during the course. So it?s important to get them to interact for a week or two BEFORE the course begins.

That way all the issues (logistical or otherwise, can be ironed out) long before the course rockets away. With the questions out of the way, it?s time for the third biggie: sharing their experiences.

3) They share their experiences in great detail

The experiences of the alumni are critical for one reason alone: Every one of their experiences are utterly unique. Yes, some experiences may overlap, but there?s still a massive factor of uniqueness about every single one of them. On the Article Writing Course, for instance, one person wrote about how she overcame years of bullying and how the course helped her. Another talked about how his speed cartoons amazed a child on the train.

All of these experiences pop up, in strange and wonderful ways. But the struggle comes through as well. When the alumni add their joys, struggles and how they battled with resistance, the incoming batch know they?re dealing with people just like themselves. It?s very, very hard for a newbie to identify with the maestro, no matter how similar the experience, but with alumni it?s a lot easier.

And that?s because the alumni are folks who?ve just been part of the previous batch. Just three, six or twelve months ago, they were where the incoming group sat. And so the experiences become real.

But the problem does arise?

What if you don?t have alumni? What if you?re doing a course for the first time? Or what if you?re doing a course after a longish period? We have the very same issues at Psychotactics. In 2012, we were nudged by a client to conduct the Headlines course. We hadn?t done that course since 2010, and even if we did round up the alumni, the gap between the two courses would have been to vast to remember details. So there was no alumni to advise the incoming group. And this is the case if you?re doing a course for the first time as well.

And in this case, you can?t do much this time around, but you must then put it in your system to train the new course members to be alumni. The way to do this is to get them through the course and then right at the end for them to post advice for the next batch. Yes, the next batch may be a year or two years away, but it doesn?t matter.

The fact that the advice is already in place enables you to then port the advice over, so that the next batch gets the warm, comforting effect as they settle in. And because the alumni have given advice, they?re also keen to come back and help, but only provided you make your expectations clear, even as the course is in progress.

Alumni are almost never considered when training a group

Yet they are extremely useful to get the raw edginess out of the way. They help with logistical issues. And they share their experiences. In short, they become part of your team. They?re helping you, creating a sense of volunteerism and camaraderie. Over time, you?ll find that alumni relish this chance to pitch in and help. It?s up to you to give them this opportunity.

And all of these steps make a course more doable

Civic Center Plaza has been shut down to host large-scale events for extended periods during the past two months, prompting a San Francisco supervisor to complain about the Recreation and Park Department?s stewardship of the space.

Since last week, the plaza between City Hall and the Main Library has been closed down for preparations leading up to the Dew Tour, a skateboarding, bicycle and freestyle motocross event that will begin today.

Supervisor John Avalos called the event ?troubling? since it closes down the park for what he called an ?inordinate? amount of time.

?I don?t think that?s what we expect out of our Rec and Park system,? he said.

The Dew Tour is paying Rec and Park permit fees of $310,336 for sixteen days of plaza use, of which $36,832 is reimbursement for direct expenses such as park rangers or event-related wear and tear. According to the event permit, the remaining $273,504 will be profit for the department.

Street closures also are accompanying the event, including the blocking of vehicles on the block in front of City Hall and on Grove Street between Polk and Larkin streets. The event also is using Harrison Street between Fremont and Spear streets.

A department spokeswoman called use of the plaza for such events appropriate. ?From public art display, kids playing soccer on the lawn, to Off-the-Grid food trucks, SF Rec and Park works hard to strategically activate Civic Center Plaza so that it can be a fun, clean and safe public space for our children and families living in the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods,? Rec and Park spokeswoman Connie Chan wrote via email.

Chan added that the event is providing free extreme sports clinics for city youths.

?They have also generously donated BMX bikes to our recreation camps, which further encourage healthy activities and competitions among young people in our City,? she wrote.

However, Avalos also raised questions about the appropriateness of the department doing business with the event?s sponsor, Mountain Dew. The City sponsors a campaign called Soda-Free Summer as one of its efforts to curb childhood obesity.

This longer-term use of Civic Center Plaza is not an isolated incident. Just last month, it was closed for the Salesforce.com Dreamforce event, which included a performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. That event led to the plaza?s closure for six days and generated $107,865 in revenue, with $16,697 going toward park rangers and other costs associated with the event. The remaining $91,168 provided revenue for the department.

Last fiscal year, the department generated $1.9 million from special event permits, not including the $1.25 million it received in fees from the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, Chan said.

Since yesterday over 100 international start-ups have been pitching their ideas at the Dublin Web Summit to compete for a prize fund worth more than ?100,000. The winner of the 2012 Spark of Genius award is the US start-up SmartThings.

The Washington-based SmartThings, which has raised over US$1.2m on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter, garnering 5,694 backers, is aiming to add a sprinkling of intelligence to everyday objects, transforming them into smart objects, byconnecting the things in the physical world to the internet via smartphone.?

The platform consists of a hub that connects to the internet and devices that communicate with this hub while also sensing and controlling everyday things. It?s aiming to let youmonitor, control and automate physical objects. For example, SmartThings can control things such as air conditioning, lights, fans and heaters from their mobile phone.

Before the winner was announced this afternoon, Paddy Cosgrave, organiser of the Dublin Web Summit, had previous winners on stage, including Redeem & Get, which won the Electric Ireland Spark of Genius Award in 2011, and the Irish relationship management start-up Datahug, which won the competition in 2010.

?This is the first year we?ve had entries to the competition from overseas,? said Cosgrave.

Then Margaret Colton, head of marketing at Electric Ireland, took to the podium to announce the winning start-up.

Firstly, she said that the award recognises the creativity and courage of true entrepreneurial spirit.

Colton said that the panel of judges had picked the winning start-up (SmartThings) because it had ?clearly identified a product that addresses a real business need in a high-growth market".

Accepting the award Alex Hawkinson from SmartThings said that the company would definitely consider Dublin for an international office when it expands in the future. So watch this space!

The 2012 presidential race is tightening as both candidates attempt to sway the swing voters in key states that may decide the victory. Yet, in spite of all the discourse, neither the Democratic nor Republican party platform has addressed the critical issue of the decline of minority ownership in the federally regulated electronic mass media and telecom industries.

This year, both the Democratic and Republican party platforms recognized that Americans are able to achieve exceptional feats given a level playing field, at least in the context of international trade. But how can you apply this concept to domestic enterprise when systematic discrimination is interwoven into the fabric of our society?

The media and telecom industries, which represent approximately one-sixth of our nation?s economy, are a perfect example of how ingrained structural discrimination continues to limit our economic progress and civil rights goals. The first radio broadcasting authorization was awarded by the Secretary of Commerce in 1909. Forty years later, in 1949, the Federal Communications Commission awarded the first radio license to a minority-owned business. A similar pattern emerged in television when the first minority-owned television license was granted in 1973. As a result of this discrimination, minorities were decades late to the industry and faced even more challenges in overcoming licensing practices, which favored those with experience, until the policies changed in 1978. When minorities were able to get a foothold in the industry, they were often left with technically inferior stations that were geographically removed from their target audience.

Decades of Bipartisan Platforms for Diversity

Since the early days of broadcasting, the Commission, the courts, and the executive branch have endorsed diversity as a critical element of national communications policy. In the past, politicians have made minority ownership in media and telecom a priority by including it in their party platforms.

As early as 1980, the Democratic Platform promised to continue work to ?[i]ncrease ownership of small business by minorities, especially in those areas which have been closed to minorities, such as communications and newspapers? and ?continue to monitor the flow of talent into science and engineering and provide the appropriate training and opportunities to ensure an adequate number of well-trained scientists and engineers in the coming years, with particular emphasis on women and minorities[.]?

The 1984 Democratic Party Platform referenced the importance of minority ownership and participation in an evolving telecommunications system:

?This electronic marketplace is so fundamental to our future as a democracy (as well as to our economy) that social and cultural principles must be as much a part of communications policy as a commitment to efficiency, innovation, and competition. Those principles are diversity, the availability of a wide choice of information services and sources; access, the ability of all Americans, not just a privileged few, to take advantage of this growing array of information services and sources; and opportunity, a commitment to education and diverse ownership, particularly by minorities and women, that will give every American the ability to take advantage of the computer and the telecommunications revolution.?

The 1992 Republican Party Platform recognized that telecommunications could extend opportunities for citizens underserved by traditional means. It stated, ?Distance learning, through technology, will help bring exciting, quality, affordable education to all students, even in rural areas and inner cities.?

The 1996 Democratic Party Platform pledged to make significant improvements in efficiency and responsibility amongst government and, in doing so, ensure that ?all Americans have access to high quality public services, whether they reside in inner cities, suburbs, or rural communities, and [to forge] new partnerships with the private sector including small, minority, and women-owned businesses, and with state and local governments to enhance opportunities for all Americans from technology to transportation to travel and tourism.?

The 2000 Democratic Party Platform echoed the previous platform, advocating for universal Internet access and digital literacy training. ?Democrats believe that every American ? regardless of income, geography, race, or disability ? should be able to reach across a computer keyboard, and reach the vast new worlds of knowledge, commerce, and communication that are available at the touch of a fingertip.?

The 2008 Democratic Platform once again pledged to boost diversity in media ownership, stating, ?We will encourage diversity in the ownership of broadcast media, promote the development of new media outlets for expression of diverse viewpoints and clarify the public interest obligations of broadcasters who occupy the nation?s spectrum.?

A Dearth of Minority Participation Ignored by the 2012 Party Platforms

Where is the recognition of minority participation in media in the 2012 Party Platforms? Nowhere.

One has to wonder whether the omission of diverse ownership and participation in telecommunications was the deliberate response to an issue now resolved.

The answer is no.

In 2011, the Commission released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in a proceeding created to review media ownership rules. The Commission found that 2.1 percent, just 29 of the 1,394 existing full-power television stations, were minority-owned. In 2009, MMTC conducted a study on minority ownership in radio and found that only 7.24 percent of commercial radio stations were minority-owned. Even those weak numbers appear to have declined precipitously since 2009, with no FCC intervention yet on the horizon.

In addition to late entry, several other factors contribute to the dearth of minority participation in the communications industries. A 2008 Government Accountability Office study identified three primary barriers to media entry for diverse businesses: large scale ownership, lack of access to capital, and the elimination of the tax certificate. The lack of access to capital is a significant obstacle for minority-owned businesses. It?s no secret that our economy has seen better days; however, it is even more difficult for diverse businesses to overcome the access to capital barrier against the backdrop of an alarming wealth gap whereby the median wealth of White households is 20 times greater that of African American households and 18 times greater than Hispanic households.

Minority Ownership is Vital for the Future of Our Economy

Why should you and your candidate for public office care about this issue? Three reasons: (1) demographics are shifting toward a majority-minority U.S. population, (2) the exclusionary broadcast pattern is repeating in emerging industries, and (3) the FCC is facilitating a massive shift in spectrum licensing to move spectrum from broadcasters to telecommunications services in the next few years. We cannot afford to have minority-owned businesses locked out of the telecom industry.

The reality is that our nation?s demographics are changing, and changing fast. Recent census data signaled the shift when it reported that, for the first time, the majority of U.S. babies are minorities. As we continue our cultural evolution, we cannot afford to foster policies and practices that exclude what will be a majority-minority population from such a significant portion of our economy.

Innovation in telecommunications is responsible for the creation of new and exciting technologies, but in terms of opportunities for minority-owned businesses, as the song says, ?It?s All Just a Little Bit of History Repeating.? In high tech, minorities face barriers similar to those of broadcasters. Minority entrepreneurs have trouble gaining access to capital in a field where venture capitalists are much more likely to invest with White-founded businesses, due to pattern matching and a pipeline of entrepreneurs devoid of color. The problem doesn?t lie solely with businesses that are created using the infrastructure; there are also disparities as to who is able to participate in the auction process to secure licenses to build the infrastructure.

Echoing the exclusionary behavior of the FCC in the early days of broadcast licensing, the 21st century FCC has made it very difficult for minority broadcasters to obtain spectrum licenses in telecom. In 2006, the Commission applied harmful Designated Entity (DE) rule modifications that nearly eradicated minority participation in spectrum auctions. The Third Circuit vacated two of the rule modifications due to insufficient opportunity for notice and comment, but the Commission?s reinstatement of the previous version of the rules failed to make up for the lost opportunities that resulted from the application of invalid rules.

The ability of DEs to participate in spectrum auctions has never been more relevant. Right now, a significant opportunity to enter the industry is brewing as the Commission begins the incentive auction process to redistribute spectrum from broadcast to telecommunications. In order to circumvent past mistakes and make progress to change structural discrimination, minority-owned businesses must have the opportunity to get their foot in the door and participate fully in these incentive auctions.

We Cannot Afford to Ignore This Problem

In the 2012 Party Platform, both political parties recognize the importance of the telecommunications sector, but skirt around diversity. The Republican Party globally affirms that discrimination is unacceptable, while denouncing ?preferences, quotas, and set-asides as the best or sole methods? to help low-income individuals obtain opportunities to participate in our economy and society. The Democratic Party discussed the importance of minority-serving higher education institutions, recognized that small businesses are important to people of color, and acknowledged that poverty has a disproportionate impact in communities of color. However, neither party has pieced these issues together to show how diverse ownership and participation in an industry that comprises one-sixth of our economy could boost our standard of living and help us achieve the elusive goal of universal first class citizenship.

Both political parties ought to address this issue before November 6. For its part, the FCC needs to ensure minority ownership is addressed during its incentive auction rulemaking proceeding. If we fail to take this opportunity to include minority inclusion as priorities now, minorities will continue to fall behind in the years ahead ? and so will our nation.
