Video: Panel examines battleground map

In Afghanistan, who is in charge?

??On Saturday night, an Afghan soldier approached Americans, killing a soldier and a contractor; with that, the number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan is around 2,100 in the United States? 11-year-war in the country. Insider attacks have become increasingly common ? and no one seems to have a good answer about how to stop them. NBC?s Lester Holt and Richard Engel report from Kabul.

Facebook Users Say Private Messages Appear Publicly

Even if you take care to keep your Facebook messages private, privacy settings can change in an instant. Although Facebook denied any changes to its settings, our readers claimed they had private messages posted to their timeline.

Here at Mashable, the week kicked off with conversations about social good with the Social Good Summit serving as the platform for a three-day global conversation. Activists, humanitarians, entrepreneurs and CEOs all discussed how social media can affect positive change on a global scale. The conversation even broke a world record: It was the largest conversation around a single topic to ever occur in one day.

As 92nd Street Y President Stuart J. Ellman pointed out, one important message from the summit was that "social media and technology are not agents of change. They are just tools. We the connected people are the agents of change." This week on Mashable we saw different examples of how we can use these tools. While technology can bring beautiful innovation, it can also promote the rapid dissemination of prejudice. Our community provided insightful commentary around the disparate ways social media can both bring us together and drive us apart.

Even though we are more globally connected than ever before, some old rivalries continue to keep readers engaged in debate. Google and Apple products continue to face off, while the struggling underdogs Blackberry and Myspace are throwing their hats back in the ring.

Adding insult to injury, Google Maps this week unveiled an underwater "street view" feature which met an overwhelmingly positive response.

Facebook caused a social media malestrom when some users reported that private messages prior to 2010 had become publicly visible. Although Facebook claimed that no such leak had occurred, our readers had a different opinion. We also discovered a bug on Facebook that keeps post from being erased. While Facebook combatted accusations that it was releasing private information, Justin Timberlake was bringing Myspace back with a redesign for the social networking website that once reigned supreme.

But no matter the platform you're using, ultimately the greatest social media blunders are purely the result of human failings. Our readers shared some of the most memorable social media gaffes of the past few years.

However, in addition to providing us with a platform on which to screw up, the Internet also gives us a chance to learn from our mistakes. This week, the Reddit community was schooled by a Sikh woman who responded to a photo someone had posted of her as a joke. The original poster saw her response, reconsidered his original post and publicly apologized for his actions. See the gallery above for our community's reactions.

Our readers are a vital part of the Mashable experience. We encourage you to be a part of the ongoing conversation by joining Mashable Follow and brushing up on our community guidelines. Next week you might be featured in our weekly rundown of the top discussions!

Re-Made in America: 5M Jobs Are Coming Back ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

While the U.S. unemployment rate hangs high above 8%, manufacturing is one sector of the American economy that has seen substantial jobs growth over the last few years.

President Barack Obama said as much during his interview with 60 Minutes Sunday:

"The month I was sworn into office, we were losing eight hundred thousand jobs a month. We ultimately would lose nine million jobs during the height of that Great Recession. We came in, made some tough decisions....

And because of that we've now had thirty months of job growth, four and a half million new jobs, half a million jobs in manufacturing alone."

Related: THE BIG LIE: "Rich People Create Jobs

According to analysis by the Boston Consulting Group, manufacturing and supporting jobs will continue to grow by 5 million over the next decade. The firm previously projected a gain of 2 to 3 million jobs by 2020.

Hal Sirkin, a BCG senior partner and co-author of the ongoing series entitled "Made in America, Again" joined The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task to discuss the firm's latest findings and the details behind America's comeback.

What's the main driver behind the rebirth in American manufacturing?

Rising production costs in other industrialized and developing nations, including labor and energy costs, makes manufacturing in the U.S. less expensive for American companies.

Key findings from the report include:

  • In less than three years, the U.S. will have a cost advantage of 5% to 25% over Germany, Italy, France, the U.K., and Japan in a number of industries, including machinery, chemicals, transportation equipment as well as electrical and appliance equipment.
  • America's natural gas boom from shale (commonly referred to as "fracking") has provided this country with some of the cheapest natural gas prices around the world. For the foreseeable future, natural gas prices will remain 50% to 70% cheaper in the U.S. versus Europe and Japan.
  • Labor costs in other developed economies will be 20% to 45% more expensive compared to the costs of hiring U.S. workers.
  • The U.S. could grab additional exports from the aforementioned nations to the tune of $130 billion annually.
  • Average manufacturing costs in China will only be 7% lower compared to in the U.S in 2015.

Some companies are already taking advantage of America's low-cost manufacturing environment. The following examples are cited in the BCG report:

  • Toyota (TM) plans to assemble its Camry models in Kentucky and Sienna minivans in Indiana for export to South Korea. Honda (HMC) and Nissan are also ramping up U.S. production.
  • Siemens (SI) is building gas turbines for export to the Middle East.
  • Rolls-Royce recently began producing aircraft engine parts in Virginia.

Review: Unsung artists sing poetry - Canberra CityNews

WHY are the Resonants so self-effacing??

?The Poet,? Bruce Warrington, with the Resonants

This choir has been performing in Canberra for more than 20 years, and under its musical director Helen Swan, was recently seen singing with great subtlety and delicacy in Canberra Symphony Orchestra?s performance of Gustave Holst?s ?The Planets.?

In a fairly unpublicised performance on Saturday night at University House with guest conductor Mary Tatchell stepping in when Swan was unexpectedly hospitalised, two? original Canberra works were premiered in a program where the brilliant articulation of the choir served the underlying theme of poetry.

In the first, ?Versatility,? (that?s a pun) eminent Canberra poet Timoshenko Aslanides combined his first love, composition (he studied under Peter Sculthorpe at Sydney University many years ago) with his chosen career of ?full-time professional poet? in what amounted to a musical and spoken-word defence of the art of poetry.

He was aided by the collected chorales of JS Bach, though Aslanides put it the other way round, saying ?my words will clothe Bach?s music for today.?

Taking English poet John Dryden?s definition of music as ?inarticulate poetry,? Aslanides counters ?poetry is articulate music.?

In a highly studied, articulate defence of the art form, he creates a protagonist, ?The Poet?, sung by tenor Bruce Warrington, with the choir acting as commentators, antagonists and interrogators.

Timoshenko Aslanides, a defence of poetry

This is not poetry of the vernacular, although Aslanides sees himself as a defender of clear English. The poet sets himself a breathtakingly high standard when he promises, ?my poems will be not just good, but great.?

Much of ?Versatility? is an ironical attack on his b?tes noires?arts bureaucracy, government-funded poetry, (suitable for use as toilet paper) lazy poets, poetry about recent trends and transitory events, (the McPoet and McPoems) ?carbohydrate prose? and peer-group assessment for arts grants.

To him, true poets should be concerned with the ?kindling of flame and intoxication of senses,? but so busy was he arguing, that we saw none of that.

The Poet/Aslanides acknowledges his debt to the late Judith Wright, but his poetry is more formal than Wright?s, conjuring up the satirical works of Alexander Pope and A.D. Hope.

Highly literate and suited to an educated audience, the work employs the age-old devices of assonance and alliteration, high-language words such as ?perforce,? classical references to the ?Old Comedy? of Aristophanes and cleverly-worded taunts such as: ?You don?t conceal conceit from your conceit.?

Throughout the verbal combat, the Resonants? beautifully modulated presentation of the Bach chorales, sung to words by Aslanides, tended to verify Dryden?s assertion.

When last I interviewed Liam Waterford, he was assisting Judith Clingan on an original children?s opera.

Now he is a fully-fledged music teacher and composer. Assisted by a 2009 ADFAS (Australian Decorative & Fine Arts Society Canberra) Youth Arts Award, he has produced a romantic and slightly melancholy choral suite, ?On the air are born,? based on poems by Australian poet Christopher Brennan.

ADFAS, a hardworking and largely unsung group, should be mightily pleased with this particular award. These pieces, and especially the opening piece, ?Sweet silence after bells!? will almost certainly make it into the standard Australian repertoire for choirs.

Waterford?s gentle music was beautifully articulated by the choir.

This was both a provocative and an enchanting and evening of music and poetry, with additional choral works in the program ranging from an Appalachian fiddle song? ?to songs based on a poem by Kipling and traditional Japanese verse.

The Resonants should blow their own trumpet more stridently.

LDS Emergency Resources - Communications pt4 | LDS Emergency ...

LDS - Communications

Bottom line is this, and this comes from ARRL, Amateur Radio Relay League, who says that bottom line, the origin of the term HAM, has been lost in the mist of time. But I?m sticking with ham fist. But I do really like though is what we describe people who are coming into the service, we refer to them as HAMs. When they first come into the hobby, it means ?Has A lot of Money? and when they end it, it means ?Had A lot of Money?.

The Church has adopted this system of Amateur Radio for several reasons. First of all, you?ll see this occasionally, when all else fails, there?s amateur radio. And the reason for that is, let?s look at a couple of things here: half our radios are great radios, they work on. Amateur radios have lots of bands, but the two most common, they call them the 2 meter band and the 40 band. That actually designates how big the wavelength is.

If you have a guy who?s a tinkerer and has modified his radio, which is illegal, but one would do that, you can pick this up on a radio like this. What?s the difference though, why don?t we just use these? The definition of FRS on these radios is that it has a fixed antenna. You can?t take this off. Trust me, if I could take this off, I could make it work the way I wanted to. But you can?t. So it?s a fixed antenna. Amateur radio ? no fixed antenna. What does this mean to me, to you?

Radios have to look up the antenna to see a certain resistance and certain ? they have to have some electrical properties to function and be happy. Okay? If you look at some of the car radio antennas, you?ll a see wire wrapped around them, underneath plastic. You?ll see that. That?s to trick the radio, to make it think the antenna?s this long, when it really is only this long. Or fake the radio out here ? this will function, it?s okay. This is better, okay? We?re getting a more efficient antenna here, this is alright. Oh yeah, now we?re talking. We?re getting better here. This is closer to what we want. Oh yeah, now we?ve got coils stuck in here to really fake out the antenna ? excuse me, the radio.

This is even better ? in this case, bigger is more efficient. Good range, high quality. Here ? power on this. You know what the max power is on this? 250 milliamps. That?s a quarter of a watt. Everything now is theoretical calculated, it?s not practical. The rule of thumb in radio is, and all of these, by the way are with a line of sight. If you get a mountain in the way or a massive steel concrete building, your signal is going to be reflected, it?s gonna bounce, it?ll probably come back and hit you in your face, it?s not gonna go where you hope it goes. These are all theoretical calculations.

The rule of thumb is: 1 watt equals 50 miles. So, theoretically, if you stand on a mountain and see a mountain 50 miles away, you should theoretically be able to get to it with an efficient antenna. So let?s go back here. 1 watt = 50 miles, half a watt = 25 miles, quarter watt = 12 miles. How many of you seen on these packages that say ?12 miles?? That?s a theoretical calculation.

So first of all, you have a quarter watt inefficient antenna. It?s theoretical, it?s true, but it?s not practical. If I ever took it and I stood here on range, watch his daughter drive away and they got about ? or a mile away, and that?s about as good as it gets. Don?t expect any more out of them ? I use these all the time. They work very well; they?re inexpensive, great to have.

These here are 5 watts. Remember, anything on top of that, is theoretical. What makes amateur radio important to us, to the church in emergency communications, is that we can take that antenna off and the more efficient you can make your antenna, you can take that low power and make it behave like a whole bunch more power. For example, this happens to be a follow-up design of an antenna put on your house.

This is what we call a Jay Hole ? this is a really interesting design. This actually functions on two meters and 4/40, it depends on some harmonic things that go on. This happens to be looped into itself, but I can take the coax and push into here, into here and remember ? this was when it was extended, was better ? guess what? This one?s even better. This one actually has some game to it. Now, in our last emergency preparedness test that we had, Steve actually, when we set up our stations, I was over at the Institute, Steve was over at the State Center, used on of these and I don?t know if you know this or not ? but his was transmitting with this.

By the way, elevation always helps. Higher, the better. These tall guys can see what I?m talking about. More efficient the better. Steve was working ? when we were talking ? it just so happened that another group was doing an emergency test the same day, located down in San Clemente, Irvine. And guess who was interfering with their conversations?
